Announce new MediaWiki releases in blog posts as well
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

It would be useful to announce new MediaWiki releases with blog posts at the Wikimedia Blog as well. Currently we only have announcements to mailing lists and a mention in the mediawiki.org homepage. A blog post sounds like a sensible improvement for 2015 ;) that would also make it easier for promotion in our social media channels, which are well synced with the Wikimedia Blog.

New major releases definitely reserve their own blog post. The content is already produced for the related wiki pages, and having only two major releases every year the Comms team surely will offer help improving the post and promoting it adequately if there is a bit of coordination in advance (not a problem since the release dates are usually estimated in advance).

For point/security releases a blog post would still be convenient, requiring only the same content added to the mailing list announcement, nothing fancy.

Another motivation for this request is that the future mediawiki.org homepage being proposed would pull news directly from the Wikimedia Blog - Technology category, which would be an improvement over our current archeological approach with News via wiki templates. This means that whenever that new homepage is implemented, you would only need to publish the blog post, and the news would show up in the homepage automagically. Amazing XXIst century!

Related, if we could make the major version landing page a bit nicer, that will itself be a nice improvement. I did it when we released 1.18 by adding a few images from common https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.18

  • The gender support has a picture of a toilet sign
  • exif camera orientation is illustrated by a plane flying on its back

For 1.25, we have a video at least :-} https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.25

Working with Comms would also help having a first paragraph explaining what is great about the release and why you should be updating right now. I guess we agree that the first paragraph of [[MediaWiki 1.25]] is an addition of correct statements that has room for improvement in terms of creative writing. :)

To do much of this (none of this is free in a time sense) RelEng (aka Chad and I) will need help from others. I don't want to commit to it and then not get it done because we didn't have the time.

/me reads more fully, excuse me, I've been mostly afk for the past few days

I see this is also in the DevRel team's backlog, so, uh, thanks for the offer of help, I guess! :)

Yes, we can help. Having a task created for every release will be useful, since I'm not following all the release process.

T112842: Write blog post announcing MW 1.26 (not sure if that should block this task or some such, also, if I should remove Release-Engineering-Team from this task now?)

Qgil claimed this task.

This is official now! Every new MediaWiki release will have a related blog post. RelEnf, DevRel and Comms are aware. We can resolve this task, and focus on the next release: T112842: Write blog post announcing MW 1.26.

Thank you!
