[to triage] linking a substring of a non-adaptable link keeps the whole initial gray link editable without dropping the new link
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Linking a substring of a non-adaptable (grey) wikilink in the target language pane keeps the initial grey link editable. You then can e.g. "Mark as missing" to turn the whole initial grey link into a red link while the nested new link stays in place.

(I did not test into what wiki markup source code it gets rendered after "publish"ing.)

Tested with Mozilla Firefox 38

The issue is still present in CX2.

Using the translation `norks(bokmål): Folkedalstunnelen-> norsk (nynorsk) as an example. A section has non-adapted link which can be edited separately (part of it can be existing link, but the link will maintain the unity as a missing link, which may be confusing.

non-adapted linkpart of the link can be converted into existing link

The wikitext will be:

Here the translation editor software could be smarter, but the current results are predictable (i.e., each action does what it promises). Similarly to adding a link for just one blank space (" "), is something that you won't normally do, but you can.

Given the complexity of the content and the number of possible actions and combinations, I don't think that we should aim for such level of anticipation to the user intent, and the current consistency in behaviour seems good enough. So I'm marking this as "declined", but feel free to reopen if there is any evidence that this is causing issues that affect the productivity of translators or cause more work to those reviewing the content.
