Newbie error. They copied the read page into the editor. Not really something we can fix for them, sorry.

@Jdforrester-WMF: These kinds of copy and paste errors are pretty common, and the fact that it's an error is not very discoverable to newcomers. This could be addressed within VE, with something like a modal that appears whenever raw HTML superscripts are pasted into VE. There would be a few rare cases where that was the intention, in which case the user can just confirm their intention and move on, but in most cases it would alert the user that they were inadvertently pasting from read mode into VE, and that they should instead copy from edit mode to preserve the references.
