Rendering sub-state administrative boundaries
Open, LowestPublic

Description

Right now we just render admin_level=2 to admin_level=4 boundaries (countries and states).

Other maps take a mixed approach to this. Locally, all the paper maps I have for navigation have city boundaries marked. Looking at webmaps, I see that these maps don't:

  • Google,
  • Stamen Terrain,
  • Baidu, and
  • HERE WeGo

and these maps do:

  • Bing,
  • OSM Carto,
  • Mapquest,
  • ESRI, and
  • Michaelin

I honestly doubt that we should do these, that just adds extra noise. Unless there are some use cases?

This really should be implemented. First, you don’t have to have 2 maps with the county in one and the location on another. It can be all-in-one. Second, this reduces size in infoboxes where there is a static map of counties taking up space. Third, you can see what counties are around the city, the city’s boundaries location in the county, and so much more usable info. This is essential for Wikipedia, and would make pushpin maps obsolete.

Hi @SkunkaMunka and welcome to Wikimedia Phabricator. Thanks in advance for your work on implementing this.

@SkunkaMunka: Hi! This task has been assigned to you a while ago. Could you maybe share an update? Do you still plan to work on this task, or do you need any help? Thanks.

Hello, we're still working on it. I would like to assign this task to someone else that is active. We are looking into figuring out how the map works and seeing if we could change the source for the background. If you could find someone who is active and would be willing to take care of this, please assign this task to them. Thank you!

@SkunkaMunka: Per emails from Sep18 and Oct20 and https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bug_management/Assignee_cleanup , I am resetting the assignee of this task because there has not been progress lately (please correct me if I am wrong!). Resetting the assignee avoids the impression that somebody is already working on this task. It also allows others to potentially work towards fixing this task. Please claim this task again when you plan to work on it (via Add Action...Assign / Claim in the dropdown menu) - it would be welcome. Thanks for your understanding!
