Tech Talk: MediaWiki for third parties
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

From T153063

For March, the next question in the list would be

What is the priority of making MediaWiki useful for 3rd parties, relative to other WMF goals and investments?

For a proposed June Tech Talk pertaining to 3rd parties I identified these unanswered questions from T153063: Wikimedia Foundation Technology and Product Q&A

  1. What is the priority of making MediaWiki useful for 3rd parties, relative to other WMF goals and investments?
  1. How can volunteers bring ideas and influence the WMF annual plans and quarterly goals? (currently when plans are published it's too late)
  1. What vision do you see for MediaWiki and volunteer developers 5 years from now?

Event Timeline

Hi @CKoerner_WMF. Please associate at least one project with this task to allow others to find this task when searching in the corresponding project(s). Thanks!

Qgil added subscribers: srishakatux, Qgil.

@srishakatux is planning to organize T155481: Tech Talk: Wikimedia Foundation Technology and Product Q&A (continued) on May. Therefore, this Tech Talk should be scheduled in June.

Which could be packaged with other questions relative to MediaWiki for third parties.

@CKoerner_WMF, can you add 2-3 of these questions in the description, taking them from the prioritized list of questions, please?

Sorry, I prioritized other work over this and it fell off my radar. Thank you for the ping. :)

@Rfarrand can help you organizing a Tech Talk.

Yes - please have the speaker add the following information to this task:

  • their name
  • name of their talk
  • short summary of their talk for publishing
  • length of their talk (45 min with 15 min for questions or 20 min with 10 min for questions)
  • ideal date range
  • ideal time of day

Cindy Cicalese, the new Product Manager for MediaWiki, will be in the San Francisco offices sometime in September. While dates are yet to be determined, the plan is to host a Tech Talk with Cindy and Victoria to discuss this topic. More information to follow.

It's September now. :) Can the date of the talk be defined?

@Qgil My current plan is to schedule this in November.

Hi @CCicalese_WMF - I am happy to start the scheduling and announcing process for this talk. Are you still interested and able to hold this in November? If yes - we can get started! :)

cicalese raised the priority of this task from Medium to High.

@cicalese: That does not seem to be the case for the last months, so I'm resetting the priority. :)

Changing status to stalled b/c there has not been any movement on this in the last two quarters.

@srodlund: The previous comments don't explain who or what exactly this task is stalled on ("If a report is waiting for further input (e.g. from its reporter or a third party) and can currently not be acted on"). Hence resetting task status.

(Smallprint, as general orientation for task management: If you wanted to express that nobody is currently working on this task, then the assignee should be removed and/or priority could be lowered instead. If work on this task is blocked by another task, then that other task should be added via Edit Related Tasks...Edit Subtasks. If this task requires info from the task reporter, then there should be instructions which info is needed. If this task needs retesting, then the TestMe tag should be added. If this task is out of scope and nobody should ever work on this, then this task should have the "Declined" status.)

To be clear, I would not decline this task, as it seems to be something folks want to do. Rather, it seems stalled because there is no plan for who will do it and when.

For now, I have removed the parent task of Tech Talk 2020, since this task was opened 3 years ago, and there are no concrete plans to do it this year.

Aklapper edited projects, added Wikimedia-Tech-Talks; removed Developer-Advocacy.

It looks like nobody plans to do this.

When/if someone plans to do this, please reopen this task and set yourself as assignee - thanks a lot!
