[BUG] Hatnotes/Disambiguation should be shown on articles
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hatnotes are not being shown in articles on Android.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Open an article with a hatnote, e.g., Barack Obama
  2. Scroll down to view article text above and below the info box.

Expected

Disambiguation text — For other uses, see Barack (disambiguation) and Obama (disambiguation). — should be visible at the start of the article content so that users wishing to view the related page(s) are immediately aware of their existence and can navigate to the content they actually wanted to access.
Note: On iOS it is below the lead paragraph, mobile web it is currently before the start of the article's lead paragraph, but will also be moved to below the lead paragraph per T143535.

Actual

Disambiguation text is not shown within the article content at all.

Note: possible related to T141782

Event Timeline

@RHo We show the disambiguation items in the overflow menu of the article (under Similar pages). Should we no longer do it that way?

hey @Dbrant – I missed that this was being done this way on Android; it should be instead shown on the article since the point of hatnotes is so readers are aware of relationships to other pages immediately and can easily navigate to that related article.
(E.g., a reader types Obama and opens the first "Barack Obama" article, but turns out they are looking for the article on Barack Obama Sr, so having the hatnote on screen towards the start of the article makes it easier for them to access the actual they would like to read. )

Change 373544 had a related patch set uploaded (by Dbrant; owner: Dbrant):

Tested on a Nexus 4 with Android 5.1 and a Pixel with Android 7.1.1 on 2.6.201-alpha-2017-08-25

Looks good. I tried a few different articles with hatnotes and they appeared correct.
