One interesting finding as highlighted in the new developers metrics and trends section in the New Developers/Quarterly/2018-01 ("Projects with most new volunteers") shows that the CirrusSearch received code contributions from new developers in the previous quarter.
We would like to explore if there would be an interest in project maintainers to consider making it a featured project for New Developers.

Not sure what contributions were made to the codebase of CirrusSearch, it is not an easy place for new developers to start
It would be interesting to know who were these new contributors and what did they contribute. Maybe they were professionals (from the team even?) that we mistook as volunteers? Or maybe the extension is getting contributions from volunteers indeed? Upstream data being added to the mix?
You can use the "New Authors" widget to list volunteer-only contributors in mediawiki/extensions/cirrussearch within the last 7 years:
