Clean up old WMSE server environment
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

As a result of T192556: Inventory of FSdata and Glesys we set up an inventory document and tagged what we had found as either delete or migrate. This is the umbrella task for all the remaining cleanup.

Event Timeline

A note around consolidation. We are currently using three cloud providers and for one of them we are using two different systems.

  • FsData has historically been sponsored. This is connected to it hosting wikipedia.se
  • Bahnhof was originally sponsored, not any more. This is where we are using two different systems, one of which is overpriced and should be gotten rid of.
  • Glesys was where we started to migrate to from fsData a long while ago. It is not super cheep BUT is branded as green hosting (100% renewable energy and spill heat is used for fjärrvärme).

Bahnhof also state that they only use renewable energy: A larger piece outlining their work around green server halls, from 2017, the renewable part was also stated in a press release in 2019. I have only spent a few minutes on this, but I couldn't find anything more recent about it.
