Import natural objects to Wikidata for Wiki Loves Earth
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Import the data on natural objects from Naturvårdsverket to Wikidata, for usage in Wiki Loves Earth. Good way of presenting something new, and also an easier task to photograph a tree or so.

Event Timeline

What are the natural objects called officially?

I found https://oppnadata.se/datamangd/#esc_entry=128138&esc_context=727 which seems to be the thing you are referring to. The problem though is that it's CC-BY and thus not Wikidata-compatible. @Lokal_Profil do you remember how it worked the previous time we imported data from Naturvårdsverket?

From https://metadatakatalogen.naturvardsverket.se/metadatakatalogen/GetMetaDataById?id=c6b02e88-8084-4b3f-8a7d-33e5d45349c4

From that site you can also access the data, in the same format as that used for the WLE import (hopefully there are some notes from back then for how centroid calculation was done etc. Note that there are both single point naturminne [~1170] (e.g. a tree) and area naturminne [~190] (e.g. a cave).

The same Commons template as used for Naturreservat can also be used for naturminne (although the template text should probably be tweaked). As a result the same upload campaign can be used.

Possible sources of confusion for participants are a) the naming of the naturminne need not clarify what it is. E.g. nvrid=2001103 and nvrid=2003276 are both trees but share the name Viksjö egendom. If you don't know what your are looking for then it's likely not easy to find it. It also makes it difficult to afterwards identify (for the photographer) which object is on which photo.

A preparatory step is to tag the following with the right P31 and P3613: https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategori:Naturminnen_i_Sverige

Talked about it with @Lokal_Profil. Technically this shouldn't be problematic but we should have a discussion about how to best include the new data in the competition, communication-wise etc, before starting to work on the upload.

Plan to discuss this with @AxelPettersson_WMSE like tomorrow. Shouldn't be very problematic in terms of communication if added here: https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Projekt_naturgeografi/WLE
But perhaps we can use it for communication.

My thoughts are more on how we can enable English-language users to take part in Sweden, as I suppose there are no translation tools on the Swedish language Wiki where all the objects now are listed.

Imported both types of naturminnen (T246692 and T246620) and created Wikipedia lists for the competititon (T246752)

This means that this task can be closed? Or is there anything more to be done?

Unless @kalle has anything to add, it can be closed.
