creating links from commons to en-wikipedia fails with message A page "Category:XYZ" could not be found on "mediawikiwiki". The external client site "mediawikiwiki" did not provide page information for page "Category:XYZ"
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

When trying to link https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Lactalis with the 'Add Links' menu item on the side menu I chose in the pop-up window as language en and then i put in the field for page 'Category:Lactalis' and when clicking then on the button 'Link page' i got the following error message:

A page "Category:Lactalis" could not be found on "mediawikiwiki".

The external client site "mediawikiwiki" did not provide page information for page "Category:Lactalis".

An this despite the fact that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lactalis exists.

It is very clear that the fact that the erorr message says "A page "Category:Lactalis" could not be found on "mediawikiwiki"." indicates that this function looks for a wikimedia project 'mediawikiwiki' which obviously does not exist. unfortunately I have no clue to look where this setting was put erronously as I suppose that in some setins or eventually translations en was replaced with mediawiki.

Robby renamed this task from creating links from commons to en-wikipedia fails with message A page "XYZ" could not be found on "mediawikiwiki". I get a different problem when trying to reproduce this, which may be related - typing "en" does not return English Wikipedia, just 'enwikibooks', see screenshot. Same for 'de', 'nl', etc.

A work-around is to add the commons sitelink through 'other sites' directly on Wikidata, which works fine (tested at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29215893 with Songwe Region).

Maybe it is just my theory, but it looks quite similar to T247078

By now the error message has changed 'mediawikiwiki' has now changed to 'metawiki'

2020-03-12 22_35_25-Category_Songwe Region - Wikimedia Commons.png (1×1 px, 84 KB)

and just on another exemple the error message refers to 'specieswiki'

2020-03-12 22_44_55-Category_Overseas Burmese Buddhist temples - Wikimedia Commons.png (634×1 px, 59 KB)

By now I receive a similar behaviour as Mike Peel received yesterday. As an exemple I received on the page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Caister-on-Sea the following situation:

2020-03-13 22_32_35-Category_Caister-on-Sea - Wikimedia Commons.png (497×1 px, 39 KB)

where you can clearly see tha when trying to select the language in the opo-up box for adding interwiki link I get just suggestions from wikiquote projects.

Some time earlier today (half an hour) the situation was different and I got just other projects in the same pop-up box.

Just a few minutes later i get on the same page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Caister-on-Sea the following situation:

2020-03-13 22_45_24-Category_Caister-on-Sea - Wikimedia Commons.png (620×1 px, 53 KB)
and then I manage to finalize the operation successfully and the iw link is added successfully on wikidata.

Per T247712 this affects more wikis than just Commons.

Indeed T247712 describes the same phenomenon and I suppose we could merge this task here with T247712
