Been looking a bit at this, and considering how to deal with the overlap between GeoData's geosearch and Kartographer's 'mapdata' and maplinks. I've noticed that many geodata secondary entries do not feature a name.. contents of the link is missing completely. That might be problematic when trying to replace the wikivoyage nearby version. Ideally we'd also want geodata to keep track of the Q item if we already know that one ?
Potential features would be image lookup, short description and linking to article.
Config options would be api endpoint, which features to show in the popup and which pinicon to use.
