This has been greatly improved with https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/Translate/+/730189 in 2021. The behavior isn't ideal yet, but it is actually rendering diffs now with minor errors, and not (quoting from Topic:Vypopy90y45cqebz) "showing the entire content on "diff": all red and all green".
We should file tasks for specific issues (e.g. I just filed T324790: Visual diffs on translateable pages highlight unchanged translation markers as added and removed).
(The example given in this task works very poorly, because the typo fix was inside a template, but that's unrelated to the use of Translate.)
