Description

We should revise the language used in the language box shown in the sidebar.

Things to reconsider

  1. the use of sitename: on certain wikis it translates poorly. Consider meta wiki:

  1. Consider mentioning the skin. The message suggests that the language box is always at the top.
  2. Consider rephrasing "top of the page" or hiding the box on tablet devices - this doesn't make sense when you view the skin on a tablet device as the sidebar appears above the language button:

  3. Consider the length of the message (see T301262 for input there)

Original report

Please reword MediaWiki:Vector-language-redirect-to-top. Currently it reads "On this {{SITENAME}} the language links are at the top of the page across from the article title. [[#p-lang-btn|Go to top]]."

  • On projects like Wikipedias this sounds reasonable: On this Wikipedia the language links etc.
  • However, this is what happened to Meta: On this Meta the language links etc.

Besides, the phrase is not factually correct: we have other skins as well. I suggest two possible solutions:

  1. Omit the first part: The language links are etc.
  2. Specify the skin: In Vector 2022, the language links are etc.

Hey folks❣ Another problem with this message: with the new Vector appearance, in a narrow window the language selector can be far from the top. In a 960-pixel wide Firefox window (half my HD screen), the mw-sidebar pushes the title and language links down so that they'res nearly off-screen screen down the page. I saw _Go to top_ and looked at the top for the language selector, but it's near the bottom of the screen along with the title (see screenshot below). Maybe the link text could be "go to page title" or "go to language selector".

Hey @Skierpage - we're tracking this in T316191: Collapse sidebar automatically at narrow widths - should be fixed later this week. The sidebar will then collapse automatically at these widths.

+1 to fixing this. It is a long, confusing, not very important message, taking up space and attention on every page.
This could be shrunk to one line w/o a border, including the icon/characters used for the real menu (文⧸A). Challenges:

  • The message length + border causes layout challenges for the sidebar.
  • "Go to top" is confusing. The whole message could just be "Go to language links". Clicking it doesn't highlight the relevant menu or open it.
  • In fact, if you click the link while at the top of the page, it moves the page down a bit. Doing this without a highlight doesn't encourage looking at the very top of the window.
  • There's no need for an intrusive message. If you're looking for lang in all the left places, you'll see it; if not you don't need it.

Related: there are four different menu items for interlanguage links and translation, using four different phrases, in four different menus. (T329531) This is a good place to start consolidating.
