Write a compilation of existing tools used in content partnerships and what needs to be maintained
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Create a list / overview of the tools that are currently used in Wikimedia content partnerships. Questions to research for each tool may include:

  • What is the maintenance status of the tool?
  • By whom is it maintained?
  • How often is it used? Do we have on-wiki statistics?
  • To what extent is this tool indeed used specifically for content partnerships?

Event Timeline

Here's an older (2017?) list of Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata tools that I compiled when I still worked for the Wikimedia Foundation. It can serve as inspiration for this task, although the situation has changed of course (there are new tools, ones that also relate to other Wikimedia projects...). https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GVR0jghBWuAGqJaT7KVXigMYWWNzdnrnwI9nWqfJrCo/edit#gid=0

Here's a spreadsheet, also with a first attempt at categorizing the tools in various ways (where are they used, for which tasks, to what extent are they 'core' partnerships tools).

A logical next step will be to consult more people to check if the list makes sense, and to help with prioritization of each tool, for instance through a survey: T311000: Develop and send out a questionnaire about which tools are used today in content partnerships

I have now also added a (subjective) 'top' list of tools as a subpage of the Hub portal: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Content_Partnerships_Hub/Software/List_of_tools

It links to the abovementioned spreadsheet, which is public and open for anyone to comment. That spreadsheet now also includes a legenda of what the columns mean. Anyone who wants to suggest other tools can add them as suggestions to the spreadsheet, or add a comment to the talk page.

Additionally I have also linked to this tool list on Toolhub https://toolhub.wikimedia.org/lists/147 (another incomplete list; Toolhub does have some more in depth info about many tools, including who maintains them).

For now, this is probably a good snapshot of the current "landscape" that we have on our radar, and we welcome additions.

@Lokal_Profil and @Alicia_Fagerving_WMSE I was wondering if you could take a quick look at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Content_Partnerships_Hub/Software/List_of_tools to see if it looks good to you? It's a selection of our longlist, the ones we currently prioritized highest (and being most relevant for content partnerships).

Also, I tried to add a link to this tool to the Portal header but it doesn't show up, and I'm baffled ;-)

I fixed the header and poked around a bit on the page. Added some notes in the edit comments and the chat

Looks good!
