Add the Catalan Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikisource, and Wikinews correct wordmark in the new vector skin
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I am a general admin and also an interface admin on Catalan Wikiquote. We'd like to add the corresponding logo to the ew skin of the project, that now shows "Wikiquote" instead of "Viquidites".

The file (vector) is the following in Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Viquidites.svg - discussion here;
It should be something easy to fix, but I guess I am not proficient enough with coding to use the Mediawiki manual for LocalSettings.php, if that's really the way to do it.

Also applicable to Wikibooks with the following file, in which as an admin I have the same problems: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikibooks_wordmark-ca.svg - discussion here

The Wiktionary with this one: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiktionary-wordmark-ca.svg - discussion here

And the Wikisource: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource_wordmark-ca.svg - discussion here

As well as the Wikinews: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikinews_wordmark-ca.svg - discussion here

As our colleagues from these communities on our sister projects are suffering the same struggles. Thank you.

Event Timeline

Hi @xavidegr I’ll add the wordmarks! Could you please open a one-week discussion in the various projects (as per policy and also to notify the projects of this change)? Thanks!

Already requested for comment or discussion in all Village Pumps (Catalan Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikinews, Wikibooks and Wikisource).

I must say that I do not clearly see why should be a discussion rather than a simple notification. In fact, we had our logos in our language, and it was a change by the WMF teams which reverted them into a plain text in English. It's the kind of actions that diminish even more the engagement and trust into the projects: a complete lack of sovereignty or interface stability.

I'll come back after a week to comment any news on this. Thank you!

Well, I just follow the policy, and the policy states that:

"In order to get a configuration variable or setting changed on your project:
[...]
2) Gather local on-wiki community consensus for the change
       1. Start a discussion at the community portal, village pump, or other major discussion venue, and give time for a consensus to develop.
       [...]
       3. In the case of a very small and low-activity community, it should be enough to show that you have tried to gain consensus, and that you have given an opportunity for objections."

So, if nobody objects in a week, I'll do the patch :)

I have no interest in defending WMF, but it doesn't seem to me that it has changed anything by not respecting the community consensus, just a new skin has been introduced, which works differently from the previous one, and therefore the logos need to be added! If you use the "Vector legacy" or "Monobook" skin, you can see the old logo indeed, this is just a Vector 2022's problem :) Thanks for your patience!

The notification to each village pump has been posted now for at least a week. In some projects, the few comments have been all positive towards the proposed change. Thank you.

Could you please provide a permalink for each of them in the task description (by clicking on "Edit Task")? Thanks (remember for the future to follow the policy when requesting a change) :)

(If only WMF followed policies too :( )

But really from my perspective this is a bug and regression introduced by WMF, rather than a site request </wmf bashing>

Hi @Base :) Yep, probably WMF had to create the SVG while changing the skin, instead of letting us volunteers fix the logos and upload the correct SVGs! However, so far I've never had problems opening a discussion, waiting a week, and then proceeding with the change (I've already done several changes and created some SVG, and I hope soon that all the projects will be fixed, but it's formally a config change, and imho it's also correct that the projects are informed of the logo change in the new skin)!

Since the discussions were over (I read them but the link should be posted here), I'll be uploading the patches shortly - I have to finish a job first and I hope to be available to deploy the patch today :)

P.S. If sysadmins confirm that we can change wordmarks and taglines (adding the one already present on Vector legacy), without any discussion, I'll be happy to do it for every project, since personally I have never found opposition on any project, when I asked to do such a change! I also don't like bureaucracy in these things, but I also recognize that a small notice to a project never fails, since they might not even understand why the wordmarks/taglines were suddenly changed :)

Thanks for confirming this! It was probably a typo in the description (and I wouldn't have set the logo as wordmark). In some hours everything will be updated. Thanks again :)

I think the last comment from @Vriullop is not legit, as the discussion is clearly still ongoing whether what should we do with the logo. Taking advantage of a ticket that was focused in the wordmark to quickly ask for a change in the logo when the ticket is almost closed (and minutes after commenting that in the local village pump) is not a nice move.

Especially when the "common" logo is not common at all and after 13 years of a partially failed voting many languages have refused it, readapted (ko), have voted against it, or simply have not to implement it (en, ru, eu, ku, de, etc.).

Therefore, the logo change should be placed on hold or even in another ticket.

Uhm, did they ask to change the logo? I will change only the wordmark with this task! If I understand correctly, they just asked to use https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiktionary-wordmark-ca.svg as wordmark! Note that File:Viccionari.svg is probably not good as wordmark for vector 2022 (usually the wordmark has a small height and all that text would display badly but we can try)! Probably the correct file is the one reported by @Vriullop!

Indeed, the change proposed for this ticket across all Catalan-language sister projects is only for their wordmarks (for Wiktionary, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiktionary-wordmark-ca.svg). And that's why the discussions in each Village Pump were opened for.

For now, the project logo that should remain as it is, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Viccionari.svg , and not https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiktionary-logo.svg. Cheers! :)

Superpes15 renamed this task from Add the Catalan Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikisource, and Wikinews correct logos in the new vector skin to Add the Catalan Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikisource, and Wikinews correct wordmark in the new vector skin.Apr 27 2023, 2:20 PM

@Vriullop Just note that you can also open a local discussion (and a new task), asking for keep https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Viccionari.svg for the old Vector skin (Vector legacy), and to show https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiktionary-logo.svg (with the wordmark that I'm adding in this task) only for the new skin Vector 2022 :)

@xavidegr I fixed the title and the description of the task (adding the link of the discussions - as we need per policy - and the correct file for cawikt). Thanks!
