Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

Enter Гдов in your search box at https://ru.wikipedia.org/ | API request: https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&format=json&formatversion=2&search=Гдов&namespace=&limit=10
Go to https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search and after choosing some namespaces set ‘Remember my current selection’
Enter Гдов in your search box again | API request example with main namespace: https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&format=json&formatversion=2&search=Гдов&namespace=0&limit=10
Compare the results: without namespace selection, results start with Гдов, with it, results are pretty random

This is also happening in Vector 2022 without that setting involved, just in https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/rest.php/v1/search/title?q=гдов&limit=10 API requests. Previously this was not the case.

What should have happened instead?:
Results should have titles that start with entered input no matter the current user settings.

(I assume) the same bug was reported with VisualEditor’s linking dialog (screenshot is not mine, but I checked the same query in new Vector search bar and entering lowercase вторжение россии yields no results in it despite [[Вторжение России на Украину (с 2022)]] article existing):

I think this is Unbreak Now! territory given how visible all of these interfaces are, so changing priority accordingly.

Seems like all of the examples above are now giving normal results again. I would resolve this in a couple of days if nothing changes (also because I am interested to know the cause).

This bug has resurfaced again, given that it is exactly the same, I am re-opening the task:

Thanks for flagging, @stjn . I'm no longer personally working with the search team at this moment, so I'll let someone from the team answer in more detail.

I can confirm this on plwiki as well, as reported in https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Kawiarenka/Kwestie_techniczne#Wyszukiwarka_si%C4%99_popsu%C5%82a (permalink).

The new occurrence is discussed in T363516: Many search suggestions missing when connecting to eqiad, but not when connecting to codfw.
