I find this request fully legitimate, since Vikidia is a somewhat famous wiki-family, at least in Italy where I have more focus. The project is oriented to young people, in an area of contribution where the Wikimedia Foundation still has no dedicated projects AFAIK.

The fact that they will use maps using MediaWiki I think is an additional guarantee that they won't mess up things (assuming that the well-known extensions in charge of Wikimedia don't do funny things).

So I thank the Vikidia community and +1.

As additional note, Wikimedia Italy officially endorsed Vikidia's activities in some occasions, also with economic support, like this one:

Were they a pre-existing user (in that case, are there examples), or would they be a new user ?

I think I would consider this one to be 'within the mission', although I guess by the technical definition that the foundation has set out, they technically might not qualify ?

I can share that Vikidia was an user of Wikimedia Maps but ~3 years ago the maps stopped working for them.

Implementing this is rather easy, but @TheDJ has a point. https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Maps/External_usage says

maps.wikimedia.org tiles may only be used by Wikimedia wikis, and sites hosted by Wikimedia Affiliates.

Technically speaking, (and correct my understanding if this is wrong), vikidia.org isn't a site hosted by a Wikimedia Affiliate. It is however endorsed by one. SRE will implement the exception, but it needs to be approved by the Maps service owner. @MSantos wanna bring it up with them?

Moving from SRE to serviceops-radar as we will be the ones implementing if approved.

@akosiaris FWIW I have always understood the guideline not to be prescriptive, but to set the direction. While not an affiliate, I think it's a solid case of Movement-adjacent reality. I don't expect a galore of cases if this one is approved (it's the first in years), and we can always revisit if there's an issue with resources. My 2c anyway.

Dear @MSantos, I am Giacomo Alessandroni, vice-president of Vikidia. We have used the Kartographer extension, but since some years - for technical reasons - it's not possible.

Vikidia isn't part of Wikimedia Foundation, 'cause it work with children (8 to 13) and the EU laws about privacy do not consent to store its data in US.

But Vikidia have an official agreement with Wikimedia France and Wikimedia Italy recognize it as part of it.

I hope that this is enough for allow us to using map.
