Raise awareness about the Extension:Graph/Plans page
Open, HighPublic

Description

This task involves the work of:

  1. Making more volunteers aware that the Extension:Graph/Plans page exists /
  2. Inviting volunteers to contribute knowledge about the experiences they've ha working with the Graph Extension.

Objective

The communication this ticket is asking for is in service of the following objective:

Ensure non-English speaking volunteers, and volunteers who have not been paying close attention to T334940 are aware of the discussion going on about the Graph Extension so that they can decide if there is information they'd like to offer/share…

Requirements

  1. The "Message" drafted below is translated into the following languages [i]:
    • Arabic
    • Hungarian
    • Dutch
    • Japanese
  1. The "Message" drafted below is posted at the following wikis in place(s) where volunteers interested in Graphs are likely to notice it:
    • ar.wiki
    • en.wiki
    • hu.wiki
    • nl.wiki
    • ja.wiki

Message

In April, the Graph Extension was disabled because of a number of security vulnerabilities. See: T334940 and T334895.

Now, the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) is inviting volunteers to share how they used the extension so that the WMF can decide how it might support on-wiki graphing capabilities going forward.

Please share what you know and think about the Graph Extension here.

i. A quick analysis shows these as the wikis where the Graph Extension was most popular. See: Graph Extension/Data.

Event Timeline

@ppelberg, did you reach out to @Whatamidoing-WMF or @Trizek-WMF to get the support you're seeking, per my advice?

He did. :)
We now need to sit and talk about the needs and the plan.

@ppelberg and I chatted. Here is the summary:

  • The wikis listed as targets are the ones that use Graph most.
  • A list of users to target will increase the chances of getting feedback. The top 5 users of Graphs at each wiki would definitely help. Peter takes care of this part.
  • CRS can treat the feedback the way they want. All feedback will be posted on the existing Extension:Graph/Plans page. @Whatamidoing-WMF and I coordinate to know who takes care of it.
  • Translations should be done this week, reaching at the users as soon as possible. @Whatamidoing-WMF and I coordinate to know who takes care of it.

@Tacsipacsi, do you already know who/how graphs is used at huwiki? I'm most interested in hearing from the editors who use it regularly.

The overwhelming majority on huwiki is made up by usages of the {{Népességdiagram}}: 42,152 pages containing disabled graphs (out of 43,105) use this template. (This single template accounts for 13% more pages than the following 11 wikis in the Google spreadsheet together!) Another 756 pages use {{Forgalomdiagram}}. Both are quite simple bar charts. (They’re basically the same – read Wikidata statements and create a bar chart from them –, with the only exception being that the former uses population (P1082) and presents one figure per year, while the latter uses patronage (P3872) and sums data if it’s given monthly/daily. Both were created by me, but I decided not to maintain them if possible when graphs became a JS-only feature, because I find it unacceptable to make these important pieces of data unavailable to users disabling/not having access to JavaScript. Now they’re unavailable even to users who do have JS…) I don’t know much about the remaining ~200 pages.
