Multiple display issues on mobile devices (December 2023)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Recently (since this week) titles of most, but not all, titles appear odd and vertical on my Google Pixel 4A using the Ecosia browser, I don't have this issue on my wife's laptop running Microsoft Windows 11 using the Microsoft Edge browser.

Also, I've had this irritating text scaling issue for MONTHS (I just didn't have the time to report this), but basically anything is unreasonable in "Desktop mode".

The vertical titles is only since this week, though I've been less active so it could have been earlier.

@cscott @matmarex is this related to the section heading markup changes you have been working on?

This appears to impact discussion tools headings.

Regarding "desktop mode"/scaling issues this seems unrelated but zoom level is decided by a browser algorithm. Legacy Vector hasnt seen any changes in over a year that may have contributed (although I am not sure exactly what you are referring to in the screenshot)

I don't know.

Using my crystal ball, I have determined that the problematic pages in your screenshots are https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:WMF_support_for_Commons and https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Donald_Trung. Unfortunately I don't see the problem there.

I'm very confused by what I'm seeing in the screenshots, though. It looks like the mobile version, but with some desktop elements. Moreover, the labels do not match the ones used by our software (e.g. your screenshots show "Latest: 3 days ago" and "3 contributors", while I am seeing "Latest comment: 3 days ago" and "3 people in discussion").

Do you have some browser extension or gadget that would reformat the pages this way? (I've seen similar problems when e.g. a translation extension was enabled, and it tried to translate English to English and would mess up the pages.)

Closing as this is caused by loading a local user script.

Yeah, I aimed for feature parity+ with DT.

I've been spending little time on wiki recently due to personal issues but added a quick hack to improve the title width issue. (which was undoubtedly triggered by some recent change in DT/Mediawiki)
