Description

Objective: Implement a means to count unique clients using a last-access cookie
Key Result: Validated and up-to-date data is available internally

Per our 2015 Jan-March goal https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Engineering/2014-15_Goals#Analytics

Implement using "Last Access" time stamp on client side and count in Varnish. Unique identifiers will not be used for this report.

Not that we are just going to try to implement "monthly" cookies on 1st phase, not daily.

Update: since Nuria's last comment: we found a way to count both monthly and daily uniques by putting year-month-day in the cookie, sending that in the x-analytics header. see details here: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/Unique_clients/Last_access_solution
