I did some experiments and will share here what worked. It's not a finished solution as it has no checks for the presence of Translate etc., but I hope someone could consider the idea and create a good quality patch:

We fixed this in TDF wiki by adding this to MediaWiki:Common.css:

Apparently it was working as of last year when tested with Manticore 2 and 3: https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Extension%3ASphinxSearch&type=revision&diff=4746294&oldid=4716446

Special:MyLanguage makes it so that it displays the page in the requested language, or in a fallback language. I think this is what readers generally want to do.

Nikerabbit's workaround from https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T268840#6672369 fixed the issue for TDF wiki.

Could the priority be raised a bit? It seems moving pages with translations is basically broken due to the extremely bad perf. Tested with
MediaWiki 1.35.1
PHP 7.3.19-1~deb10u1 (fpm-fcgi)
MariaDB 10.3.27-MariaDB-0+deb10u1

We didn't get a lot of feedback from translators. It became clear, though, that most people are not aware of the language switcher. I think this unawareness contributed to the confusion regarding my explanation of the constraints around using Special:MyLanguage. Considering all this, I think using Special:MyLanguage would be too restrictive for us.

Asking as https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Language_policy#Translate_extension states with {{#translation:}} for categories and {{TNT}} for translatable templates. (though that's MediaWiki.org only.)
The {{#translation:}} template appends the language code dynamically per current page. So you will get LibOReleaseLifecycle/es when visiting a Spanish page that uses the EasyTimeline template.

We are hitting this issue with https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Call_statement.svg
We tried to upload a version of the SVG with changes in the markup that do not affect how it is displayed.
I don't understand why a warning is treated as an error and ignoring doesn't help. It fails with "The upload is an exact duplicate of the current version of File:Call statement.svg."
