@Volker_E,
Look at the dark mode implementation at Google or DuckDuckGo for example, and see this article: https://uxmovement.com/content/why-you-should-never-use-pure-black-for-text-or-backgrounds/
Consider changing the perfect black background to one that is dark but not perfect black.

What is the status on this?
Since MediaWiki can be installed on a domain where other applications or JavaScript scripts may be installed it would be good to put the LocalStorage key in a namespace by prefixing the key with mw or mediawiki or something, followed by a dot (the . character).

That's not very discoverable, plus likely more code complexity to maintain.
The button could be dimmed when not hovered, that way it doesn't clutter so much because it is dim, yet still discoverable.

But it would also be nice with a toggle button embedded in the <syntaxhighlight> template. This would require some JavaScript.

When using the syntaxhighlight extension the author of the page can specify whether to show line numbers or not, but the person reading the page might have their own preferences.

On certain websites such as GitHub there is a text entry field that is prepopulated but empty so that when you press backspace then it removes the prepopulated thing.
