[Migrated] Do not include unimportant prefixes in DEFAULTSORT
Open, LowPublic

Description

I received a complaint on my talk page that my recent edit to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The Last Tightrope Dancer in Armenia added . Per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:SORTKEY, it should have added (without the "The") (with "The" at the end). @GoingBatty 23:17, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

I only see "In some categories, sort keys are used to exclude prefixes that are common to all or many of the entries, or are considered unimportant (such as "List of" or "The")." It doesn't say in all.

Are there categories where "The" is important in the sort?

The Beatles?

I don't see anything on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:The Beatles sorted by "The".

Furthermore, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The Beatles article contains - so I've revised my request to match this format.

Adding "The" at the end is unlikely to ever make a difference, but AWB already excludes "The" from DEFAULTSORT tagging. If you look at the edit you linked, AWB did not include "The".

Actually, you did include "The", you just gave the wrong diff. This has never happened to me; "The" is usually excluded.

Try https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The Rats (play) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The UFC Chronicles. I'm using SVN 7424. Should this be moved over to the bug list?

OK, it is adding "The". I thought it didn't. Maybe I'm wrong.

Update needed on whether this is still an issue and whether accurate rules can be defined for when or when not to drop prefixes, and what is "unimportant"

I believe that this is still an issue. For example, if you look at , you'll see that The Summit Church is sorted under "T" instead of "S" because it does not have a DEFAULTSORT template, and AWB doesn't add the DEFAULTSORT.

While it would be wonderful for AWB to be coded to follow the instructions at WP:SORTKEY, I'm not sure how it could be coded to know that:

 • A Jolly Good Fellow should have but A major should not have
 • An Answer Can Be Found should have but An Post should not have

However, creating a rule for "The" (which was my original concern) seems more straightforward. Querying on the February data dump, there are over 7,000 articles that begin with "The" that do not have a DEFAULTSORT template.

I believe that this is still an issue.

Hence resetting task status from Stalled to Open.
