Add {{Authority control}} to biography articles
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

For those articles where IsArticleAboutAPerson is true, could AWB add the {{Authority control}} template if it isn't already there? Thanks!

Is there a policy that all biographies should have this, and not only those who has authoritydata-links on Wikidata?

Needs to be clearly stated on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Authority_control

If that's done (and no subsequent objections) we will add logic to AWB. I assume this request is for en-wp only.

Done.

Thank you. There are equivalent templates for many other (but not all) languages. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3907614 has links.

I know for instance on sv.wp it should only be used if there are links on Wikidata which will be shown.

If added, this should be added as a minor edit (and skipped if marked "skip if minor edit), since it may violate COSMETIC f there are no links on Wikidtat which will be shown, and therefore no visable change are guaranteed.

If ALL pages about persons needs n Authority control then Wikidata should auto-diplay it when "instance of a person" instead of having to declare it explicitly in the wiki-code.

It should be the same as interwikis auto generated.

Addition of the AC template is a decision made by each wiki community, not the Wikidata community.

To me it seems to be a specific task rather than a general fix. Identify biographies without the template and add it. Run it daily on new creations, specifically identify and fix the backlog.

My guess is that Wikidata can publish on projects by request. It is not an "all or nothing" situation.

As it is a newer template that many are using, including Commons and Wikisources, maybe the alternative is to have a means to have a more specific to test and append.

The AC template is pertinent to people, organisations and their works,

AWB only has logic to correctly identify biography articles for en-wp, so addition of authority control template would only be for en-wp,

Putting this back to "user input needed", there are policy/consensus discussions ongoing.

@Rjwilmsi - I just added a note at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/General_fixes#IsArticleAboutAPerson saying "Note: This function is applied to en.wiki only".

If there are other AWB functions that are only for en.wiki that aren't labelled as such, could you please do so? Thanks!

Although I do support this and think and can and should be done. I wanted to clarify a couple things:

  • Authority control has been around for about 6 years so that's hardly a new template.
  • For those that don't know already, Wikidata populates the Authority control template (on some wiki's including ENWP, but not Commons yet). So there is already some interaction between Wikidata with regard to this template.
  • Although it might be good to have Authority control on a biographical article, a lot of them will not have anything in them other than an empty template. Not every bio has information out there on the Authority control applicable sites and not all of the ones that do have been populated in Wikidata.
  • It would also be good to add the Authority control to the applicable pages on commons, its outside the scope of this discussion and would need additional discussion there, but I do think it could be done by AWB with no or limited adjustments to the about a person logic.

@Reguyla how is this request related to Commons. Developed biographies are the provenance of the WPs only. Any separate ticket on a related matter may be for Commons. Authority control may related to a Creator: ns, it may relate to a book item (though not to an edition). So I would think you need to elaborate on how this is a Commons-related issue.

This request is related to commons because Commons uses the Authority control template. Let me clarify, I know I said biographies but I mean biographical categories.

Can I suggest that rather than we do a hotchpotch of an approach for AWB and Commons picking components that we look at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Category_scheme_People
and talk about a consistent and planned approach.

It might also be worth looking to utilise Wikidata items to identify whether a category is a person or not.

So can we please clean up the request to have a useful title for the request, and the detail/description be specific about the requirements. To me it seems that the components for Commons, especially due to the reference to IsArticleAboutAPerson make those components a separate, though linked, request.
