Name the licence on the first screen of the media upload dialog
Closed, ResolvedPublic1 Estimated Story Points

Description

When you choose the upload tab in Insert > Media dialog, it says, If you do not own the copyright on this file, or you wish to release it under a different license, consider using the Commons Upload Wizard." But it doesn't say what the proposed license is. Consequently, it's impossible for the user to know whether s/he wants a different one before clicking on anything else.

Please display the license somewhere inside that dialog box, during its initial/nothing clicked on state.

This'll need Legal to re-approve the text.

Eh, why? Legal only approved the legalese, not all the other text. We could just change "under a different license" to "under a license different than [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0]".

Or we could even just keep using the exact same text, but rearrange it:

Now:

pasted_file (375×509 px, 24 KB)
pasted_file (375×509 px, 22 KB)

We could do this instead:

pasted_file (375×509 px, 33 KB)
pasted_file (375×509 px, 22 KB)

I don't think this is low priority, it's a pretty glaring mistake we have somehow all overlooked. I think the dialog looked closer to the "rearranged" version I proposed above at some point and was changed to current less text-heavy version just before it was merged.

Re-arrangement means no need to re-validate it with Legal, so +1.

Rearranging is totally fine with me. Naming the license would be fine with me. Even just a CC-BY-SA 4.0 icon would be fine with me.

Do you want separate check boxes for "This is my own work" and the license statement?

One more thought: Aren't the licenses different on some projects, e.g., Wikinews?

Naming it in the text, e.g., "under a license different than [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0]" is fine only if there is some accessible variable that will make it name the correct license for that project.

Yes, but the content licence of the project from which you're uploading is irrelevant; it's Commons's licences that matter. If you don't want it to be CC-BY-SA-4.0, you have to use UploadWizard.

Change 247804 had a related patch set uploaded (by Bartosz Dziewoński):
mw.ForeignStructuredUpload: Rearrange messages to always display license name

Now:

pasted_file (375×509 px, 24 KB)
pasted_file (375×509 px, 22 KB)

We could do this instead:

pasted_file (375×509 px, 33 KB)
pasted_file (375×509 px, 22 KB)

I added some light styling to this idea:

pasted_file (375×509 px, 33 KB)
pasted_file (375×509 px, 22 KB)

…inspired by VE's save dialog:

pasted_file (287×509 px, 31 KB)
