re-add the priority field to the "create task" create screen
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Fr-tech has many stakeholders who need to add a priority to their tasks. These stakeholders are not in any higher level acl type projects/groups (and they don't need to be).

I imagine many other teams would like this restored. Is there any strict policy against this?

Edit by @mmodell:

If you want to set an initial priority, please bookmark the following form URL:

https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/18/

The default form remains sans-priority to discourage bug reporters from bypassing triage.

Event Timeline

Specifically "not by the reporter filing the bug report"

I was going to report this same task yesterday, in fact.

I think there is good reason for generally not promoting the setting of priority by general bug reporters. But product managers, scrum masters etc, when working on tasks for the team they serve, do have a social contract that allows/promotes that behavior.

+1 to Greg's comment

Also, we don't differentiate between task and bug creation. Stakeholders and team leads who might not have special privileges still need to make tasks. Right now they have to create a task and then add the priority in a second step. I'd like to make their lives easier.

Since this wouldn't be a security measure, we could set up a different form showing the field, visible to a publicly-joinable group?

There is a problem if we reallow the priority setting at creation. Since the update, phabrictor don't shows details at task creation, so if you set the priority at the task creation, the initial priority is not shown, but if you set it after creation, it is shown, so setting priority later is an advantage for people who need details. (Same at status, maybe assignee could be hidden too).

@Luke081515 how to you know this is the case? Was it documented or tested somewhere? That sounds like a bug to me.

This seems like the way to go, IMO

Upstream confirmed, that this is intentional, to keep the create message small.

Aklapper lowered the priority of this task from Low to Lowest.May 4 2016, 8:47 AM
Aklapper removed a project: Project-Admins.

Proposing to either decline this or really restrict displaying that item to very specific team project membership, given the confusing outcome described in T134552 for many people, compared to having one click less for those few people who want to use the priority field and also be able to set it initially.

@Aklapper: I agree, I didn't realize this would cause such a backlash.

Honestly the convenience of having the custom forms in the +Create menu isn't worth the confusion from people who don't get it (or people who are allergic to clutter)

I've removed the extra forms from the create menu.

Anyone wanting to use the 'priority' field should just save a bookmark to this url:

@Paladox: please try one more time, I just fixed the policy.
