After replacing geohack links by maplinks on frwiki, there is a demand for the "Group" functionality, like what is set on wikivoyage.
I know we should get a formal community consensus, but before asking for it, is it possible to do? Is there some technical issues?

We can't enable this anywhere else because VisualEditor can't support it. CC @Jdforrester-WMF.
Adding to the interactive sprint board to keep an eye on the progress that the WMFR community makes with adding the group functionality to frwiki (similar to what is on Wikivoyage).

Unfortunately the "group" feature for Kartographer as it's currently written depends on page-level state, which means the performance is not great and it breaks in some contexts (most visibly the numbering is wrong in VisualEditor, but there are other issues). At the time, Wikivoyages were using a community-written gadget that broke in even more contexts to do this, so we let it be deployed as-is, but with the agreement that it wouldn't be deployed any further until that was addressed. However, it's not clear how (let alone when or by whom) that will be done, I'm afraid.

Is there an estimation on how long or how difficult this work would be to fix the group feature? Would the fix need to be in VE or within Kartographer or both? It's not really clear where the work lies as stated in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/284483/.

Due to maps resourcing constraints we have no plans to expand this functionality to non-Wikivoyage wikis.
