Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

This task will track the setup and installation of labnodepool1002.

Racking Proposal: This needs to be in the labs-hosts1-b-eqiad vlan (as its the only labs-hosts1 vlan in eqiad), so it has to go in row B.

  • - receive in system on procurement task T163020
  • - rack system with proposed racking plan (see above) & update racktables (include all system info plus location)
  • - bios/drac/serial setup/testing
  • - mgmt dns entries added for both asset tag and hostname
  • - network port setup (description, enable, vlan)
    • end on-site specific steps
  • - production dns entries added
  • - operations/puppet update (install_server at minimum, other files if possible)
  • - OS installation
  • - puppet/salt accept/initial run
  • - handoff to @chasemp for service implementation

Nodepool will be phased out eventually over the next 6 months or so. So maybe we can recycle labnodepool1002.eqiad.wmnet? I am not sure it is worth the time to setup a spare for a service that is going to be decommissioned?

@RobH : Given Antoine's comment, let's reclaim, then? This host has almost 2.5 years remaining warranty

The thinking has been that even with nodepool decomissioned there will be another piece of software responsible for managing a resource pool for execution, but that aside we found out a bit ago that labservices1002 had fallen through the cracks and is older than expected so I was wondering about reallocation there.

+1 for using this box to replace the labservices1002 box which has been flagged as out of warranty in a recent round of eqiad hardware audits.

@greg can you weigh in here? We are attempting to reallocate this if you don't object.

So yes: lets decommission labnodepool1002.eqiad.wmnet :]

Reassigning to Rob since I guess some meta data will need to be updated in Racktables for repurposing the server.

Reassigning to myself to understand what's happening here.

I'm not exactly sure what is being done here? It seems that labnodepool1002 no longer needs to serve in that role, and will be assigned a new hostname for another role?

Can someone clarify if this is being reclaimed to spares, or reclaimed to another use?

Thanks @Andrew!

It is being reused as cloudservices1003.wikimedia.org T201439
