Document subtypes / task types in Phabricator
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

T93499 introduced task subtypes. I have no idea how to use them. Or how they should be used. Or how to apply or change them on an existing task. Or what that means for existing tags which predate this functionality and now partially duplicate it. Or if a task can only have one type.
Cannot find any documentation on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Phabricator/Help

I'd like to confirm if the following screenshot is related to this task.

Change_Form_Subtype.png (591×1 px, 61 KB)

It's about setting/changing defaults for Forms, so it's related both to Forms and Subtypes. :)

Thank you. Bizarre that such metadata about the task cannot be changed from the "edit task" button or any of the nearby buttons. Is there a bug upstream about this? (It's good to know whether this is a conscious design decision or just a temporary error, just to avoid documenting a bug as if it were a feature.)

I described the high level of this stuff in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/phame/post/view/147/projects_forms_and_subtypes_oh_my/

Task types control which form is used to edit a type and therefore which fields are available for that task type.

Changing the subtype of a task shouldn't be a very common thing - once a task of a given type is submitted it will generally not change type under normal circumstances.

[bulk] Setting points to "", given it doesn't make any sense to have them as "0".

mmodell triaged this task as Medium priority.

I'll take a stab at writing some documentation on wiki in the near future.

Thanks @mmodell, this is helpful! https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Phabricator%2FProject_management&type=revision&diff=3411632&oldid=3170469

I made a few more edits and covered the steps to perform when manually changing a task type in https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Phabricator%2FProject_management&type=revision&diff=3436138&oldid=3430401

I think we're fine here hence boldly resolving this task.
