Excessive spam with Structured Discussions at euwiki Village pump
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

Hello!
We deployed Structured Discussions at the euwiki village pump (https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Txokoa), but we are having lots of spam attacks, mostly in Russian, but also in other languages. Is there any way we can use to solve this?

Hola. There are some solutions avalaible such as SpamBlacklist or AbuseFilter. I'll see if I can craft something for you later after seeing the vandalism/spam edits, unless anyone else want to. I have to leave for lunch now. Regards.

It is possible to create AbuseFilters for SD. However, it is not possible to properly test them (because of T115128: AbuseFilter test tools does not work for Flow edits).

Maybe the simpler would be to ask a community who already implemented these filters, and copy them. You can ask French Wikipedia for instance.

Can you guide me with this process, please?

I'm not a FilterEditor and I have no clue on how to create one. I'm sorry.

My suggestion is that you come to French Wikipedia ans ask them to privately share their filters with your community. You can use English to discuss with them and say that I suggested you to contact them.

In any case, you should wait for @MarcoAurelio's input, since he may have a better suggestion.

I am sorry for the late reply. I am not feeling well since some days ago. I took a quick look and found that the spamming issue you're having is the type of https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topic:Vbqoovticibumddu. That complicates things a bit for me. If it were "classic" spam (insertion of external links, etc.) we could build some Spam Blacklist rules, but given that they're random users inserting random gibberish this has to be handled via AbuseFilter. I am not sure which approach would be best here, but @Daimona and @MusikAnimal are excellent abuse filter managers so I'm taking the liberty to ping them here to see if they can see if something can be done.

Hi, I'm sorry but it's a bit hard for me to write a filter because all of the spam posts were disabled. I also suggest to take a look at mw.org filters, where you'll find several examples of how we fight spam on flow boards.

Removing software project tags as I don't think that this is related to their codebases (except for if there are actionable and well-defined problems or changes proposed for these codebases).

If this is still an issue and if there are test cases and more info available (see previous comment), then https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit#Block_bad_edits and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit#Questions%3F would be venues for further support. Thanks!
