Stage 1: Come up with and track guardrail metrics for IP Masking
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Goal

As the Anti-Harassment Team plans to move forward on IP Masking project, we should come up with guardrail metrics that we can track to ensure our work does not have any negative impact on our projects. These metrics would track metrics relating to workflows on the wiki that involve the use of IP addresses as they exist today.

Why is IP masking moving ahead after 95% community opposition?

Why is IP masking moving ahead after 95% community opposition?

Hi @Mandruss. Thanks for your question. As you probably know IP Masking project is driven by the new and upcoming data privacy laws in the world. It's an important project to ensure our projects continue to operate well without any threat. The data privacy laws on the web are actively becoming more and more restrictive and we strongly believe (after putting in considerable research) that sooner or later publishing IP addresses will not be a viable option to us. Often these laws are targeted towards companies that collect private data. IP addresses are considered as private data because they can turn up a surprising amount of private information. Believe me when I say that the decision to take on this project was not made lightly. We took into consideration every possible factor. We are working in earnest to develop tools that will allow our editors to continue their work without any roadblocks. IPs will not be masked unless we can ensure doing so will not be harmful to our projects. Our project are our foremost priority.

Lastly, I'd request you to please discuss this on the project talk page rather than this Phabricator task. Thank you so much.
