Statistics on image clicks from Wikipedia articles across time
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

From the parent task: […] last month, the tech department did some analysis on Wikipedia content and announced this: "By analyzing webrequest logs for english, spanish, arabic and french Wikipedia, we found that when readers visit a page on Wikipedia, around 3% of the time they also click on an image." We would love to see a consolidated dashboard of image clicks on a per wiki basis over time.

Event Timeline

This statistic was mentioned in the Technology Department's Quarter in Review for Q4 of FY 19/20. Looking further, I found out that it comes from the Understanding Engagement with Images in Wikipedia research project. More detailed statistics can be found on the First Round of Analysis page, which I'll dig into further. Looks like T250154 is the parent task for this work.

nettrom_WMF moved this task from Triage to Needs Investigation on the Product-Analytics board.

Moving this into the current quarter on the Product Analytics board since I'll be chatting with @Miriam about this some time soon.

Closing because this isn't relevant to any product questions we have right now.

One thing we discussed at the same time we discussed closing this task is that this measurement might give us an indication of utility of images in the sense of seeking to download them, and possibly reuse them elsewhere. Since this task was opened, Media Search on Commons is available and instrumented. One of the things we track there is users clicking through to the file page. We also have metrics on filter usage, where we see high resolution and freely reusable images being frequent choices. These measurements can be used as a proxy for "interest in (high quality) free media" in the meantime, and if we end up having specific questions a new task can be opened.
