First, my apologies if this is a known bug.
When you are at the top of an article, you can swipe downwards until it shows a loading dial and the screen dims, then release. Supposedly this refreshes the article or something.
However, if you swipe down until the loading dial is on-screen and the screen dims, keep your finger on the screen and manually swipe back up again, essentially “putting the article back in the right place”, the app/article appears to freeze. I’ve tried this on two articles, same result. This is happening on my iPhone 8, Wikipedia app is up-to-date.
Steps to reproduce:
- Launch app, go to a Wikipedia article
- Swipe downwards at the top of the article until the loading dial appears and the screen dims. Keep your finger on the screen.
- Slowly swipe back up again with that finger, either until your finger goes off the touchscreen or let go when the screen only shows article content (e.g. top picture/article title is right at the top of the screen).
- If done correctly, the article remains dimmed and the article/app is now totally frozen. You can only read and do what’s on the screen - trying to scroll or use the navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen will not work. In Dark Mode, the navigation buttons will all be grey, rather than the usual blue.
While I’m sure most users will use this refresh correctly (by releasing their finger), this is still a bit of an awkward bug. Unfortunately, I am not able to test it on any other devices, e.g. iPad or an “all-screen” iPhone that does have a home button.
I hope this bug report is helpful, and thanks for all the helpful articles, Wikipedia!
