Add an Image: caption bug funnel comparison analysis
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The Growth team noticed that the "View image details" link was no longer available in the Add an Image interface and filed T309152 to fix it. From the task description in that task, this bug has been around since March 10. This means that it was in effect for most of the data used for the desktop funnel analysis from the three initial target wikis (Arabic, Bengali, and Czech), and for all of the data used from other wikis.

In this analysis, we'll see this as a natural experiment and compare pre-bug data with post-bug data from Arabic, Bengali, and Czech Wikipedia. This should give us an indication of what the impact of this bug has been with regards to completion of the Add an Image task.

This work is timeboxed to 2 hours.

Because the pre-bug data falls within the 90 day data retention window, it's important to do this ASAP, and it's currently scheduled for May 27.

Event Timeline

I've completed a first pass of this analysis. As the task description mentions, the approach here was to gather data from Arabic, Bengali, and Czech Wikipedia prior to the bug going into effect, and compare that with a similar dataset right after deployment. In this case, I chose to use two weeks of data post-deployment, as that's roughly the amount of data we have for the prior period.

I chose to focus on the workflow from On Task to Task Completion, split by whether the user skipped or completed onboarding. The findings are as follows:

  • Users who skipped onboarding: we cannot conclude anything about the impact of this bug because no user completed the task on their first interaction with the feature during the pre-bug period.
  • Users who completed onboarding: it appears that this bug reduced the proportion of users reaching the Edit Summary by 20–25%. Prior to the bug going into effect, 100% of users who focused on the caption entry box also reached the Edit Summary. After the bug went into effect, this is reduced to 75% of users. I'm hesitant to say that every user would have reached the Edit Summary because the numbers are fairly small in this short dataset, hence the 20–25% estimate.

In the Desktop Funnel analysis, we used a dataset from all seven wikis that currently have Add an Image and found that 75.9% of users who focused on the caption entry box also reached the Edit Summary. It seems this number could've been around 95% or possibly higher if the bug was not present. We can always wait a bit and do this analysis again but using data from after the bug was fixed.

Moving this to "Needs Sign-off" for @KStoller-WMF and @MMiller_WMF to review.

Thank you @nettrom_WMF for completing this work and fitting it ASAP while we still had the data!
This regression was clearly not ideal, but I am glad we were able to learn something about this stage in the funnel.

I've added your findings to my notes for “Add a link” iteration 2 planning, so we consider the importance of the "View image details" link while we plan further improvements.

I'll update the status to Resolved, but @MMiller_WMF should feel free to follow up or change that as needed.
