Hi @Vikipolimer. Is this the file (https://github.com/Vikipolimer/Adiutor/blob/main/Gadget-Adiutor-i18.json) that has the strings to translate and the translations? Translatewiki.net doesn't support having all the strings in a single file. Would it be possible to split them out into different files? Something like this: https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Translate/tree/master/i18n/core?

Hi @Vikipolimer, a couple of things:

  1. We recommend adding message documentation for the strings in the project. You can look at examples in the qqq.json file in the repo here: https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Translate/tree/master/i18n/core
  2. Can you please add the user https://github.com/translatewiki to the repository so that it can push the translations from translatewiki.net to the main branch of the repository?

Hey @abi_ I've added the user to the repository but I didn't understand the first request. Do you want me to create qqq.json file?

Thanks! I've accepted the invite.

I see that you've added the contents of the en.json file into the qqq.json file. Quoting from the documentation on translatewiki.net regarding message documentation:

In splitting text strings into individual "messages", the context essential to translation is lost. In order to restore enough context to ensure successful translation, documentation is written manually for the messages. It is conveyed using a pseudo-language, having the code qqq (message documentation).

As an example from https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Translate/tree/master/i18n/core:

The en.json file for Translate contains:

"translate-edit-tmmatch-source": "Translation source text: $1",

And the qqq.json file provides context for translators as to what that string does:

"translate-edit-tmmatch-source": "Used as tooltip for the message {{msg-mw|translate-edit-tmmatch}} in the translation suggestions by the server.\n\nParameters:\n* $1 - translation source text",

Hey @abi_ I've completed the documentation messages, https://github.com/Vikipolimer/Adiutor/blob/main/i18n/qqq.json

Thanks this is OK to start with, but strings such as this that have parameters ($2, $1) need additional documentation that describe what each one is.:

"welcome-date-change-message": "{{GENDER:|You}} have made $2 {{PLURAL:$2|change|changes}} to Wikipedia since $1.",

An example string from the Translate extension (https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Translate/blob/master/i18n/core/en.json#L55):

"translate-edit-tmmatch-source": "Translation source text: $1",

The $1 here is described properly in the message documentation (https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Translate/blob/master/i18n/core/qqq.json#L92):

"translate-edit-tmmatch-source": "Used as tooltip for the message {{msg-mw|translate-edit-tmmatch}} in the translation suggestions by the server.\n\nParameters:\n* $1 - translation source text",

@Vikipolimer What would be the best place to contact you in case translators had questions about the strings to be translated? Would it be GitHub issues, the talk page or somewhere else?

@abi_ I prefer the discussion page, thanks!
