MinT for Wikipedia readers: Iterate design concepts based on research observations
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

MinT can be useful for Wikipedia readers to access knowledge available in other languages. The initial ideas explored (T340997) were represented with several multilingual prototypes (T350090) for the research (T348349) to be conducted with Hindi (hi), Chattisgarhi (hne), and Awadhi (awa) speakers.

After an initial round of research, the prototypes have been adjusted based on the initial input. Details about the different concepts and what's new, is provided below.

A) Surfacing missing sections after the article

Changes based on initial observations:

  • The Automatic Translation section after the article has been updated to communicate more visually it is providing translations to the target language. In the video the language pair is showing "English" for both, but in the other languages this will read as "English -> Hindi".
  • Automatic translated contents are surfaced in a separate card below the languages, where only one section is displayed. Article and section titles are shown in both source and target languages to communicate the concept of translation.
  • Call to action uses an icon for additional visibility.
  • Other instructions have been removed since users were skipping them. We try for content to tell the story.

The prototype is available in the following languages:

B) Language selector

Changes based on initial observations:

  • A single screen design is used for both entry points (missing languages and explicit intent to add languages). The new screen is based on the version that was more effective with a small note on missing languages to make it work on both scenarios.
  • Language change in the missing languages banner to use the "Not available" term instead.
  • Translated content presented in a single view for the whole article to avoid fragmentation into sections. Users have a floating language pair as an indicator that the contents are machine translation. This element provides access to translation-related options.

The prototype is available in the following languages:

C) Invite to Language Selector

Changes based on initial observations:

  • Notice is presented more integrated into the pag. Less as a popup which was causing some concerns.

The prototype is available in the following languages:

D) Search

Changes based on initial observations:

  • Machine translated results are not showing directly as part of the search. An indicator of additional results requires users action as a way to make them aware that they are accessing a different type of results.

The prototype is available in the following languages:

E) Machine Translation Home

Changes based on initial observations:

  • The human-written contents are listed at the end, avoiding to be sandwitched between machine translation to reduce confusion. Additional description is provided to make the differentiation more explicit.

The prototype is available in the following languages:
