Design exploration for the consumption of machine translated sections of Wikipedia articles
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

After MinT has been released to support machine translation for many languages in Content & Section Translaiton, we plan to support new contexts.

This ticket focuses on the use of machine translation to enable access for Wikipedia readers to article contents not available in their languages. In particular, we'll focus on languages not supported by other translation services (35 languages using NLLB-200: T326578, and 13 using OpusMT: T333969 ).

A design exploration will consider potential ways in which machine translation can be exposed to Wikipedia readers to access more knowledge about the topic that is only available in other languages.

As part of the design exploration we want to incorporate asects such as:

  • Clarity with the distinction between community-created contents and machine translations
  • Encouragement to contribute to community created contents.
  • Support across platforms: mobile and desktop.
  • Support for missing section (main focus) and missing articles (secondary).

An initial idea was explored (T270714) as an entry point for Section Translation. The initial research suggested that (a) quality of the machine translation was a relevant factor (low quality encouraging users to improve, but decreasing their trust in the contents), and (b) confusions being produced with the lack of a more clear distinction between the community-created contents and the machine translations.
