MinT for Wiki Readers (machine translation of wiki contents)
Open, MediumPublic

Description

MinT is an open machine translation service, and we plan to use it to exposing machine translated contents to readers of underserved wiki communities.

The initial focus is to surface machine translated versions of Wikipedia article and sections from other languages. This will allow readers to expand their knowledge beyond what is covered in their language. For example, a speaker of Fula interested in learning about the moon in their language will have access to machine translated versions of additional sections present in other languages (13 from English, 11 from Japanese, etc.) which will help learn about more aspects about the topic (from "formation" to its "legal status").

In addition, other related scenarios can be consider to expand the access to more topics, by surfacing machine translation for articles do not exist in the local language. Expanding the scope will depend on the lessons learned from the initial focus on sections.

This is an Epic ticket compiling sub-tasks for this area of work and the initial focus i on an MVP: T359072: MinT for Wiki Readers MVP. This area of work is in support of the Wikimedia Foundation Product & Technology Objective and Key Results (OKRs). In particular it supports the key result WE2.2 with the following hypothesis:

Scaling Open Translation service will increase page interactions from underserved communities
Exposing our machine translation service to support the automatic translation of Wikipedia article contents. Make the service available for 10 languages not supported by commercial vendors such as Google Translate. This will increase page interactions from underserved communities by making millions of Wikipedia articles more accessible with automatic translation.
Success will be measured after 6 months by a 3% increase in page interactions on the pilot wikis driven by the views to automatic translations of content.
