Remove non-public/WMF-specific resources from Codex content writing resources page
Closed, ResolvedPublic1 Estimated Story Points

Description

There are currently links to two non-public pages/presentations on the "Additional Resources" page in the Codex copy writing guidelines.
These should be removed to avoid confusion as the page is meant to offer publicly available resources, and secondly since one of the links was an early vendor exploration without review by P+T staff.

Proposed action

  • Remove the link to officewiki - This [[ https://office.wikimedia.org/wiki/Inclusive_Communications_Guide | quick guide ]] to certain communication aspects related to diversity, equity and inclusion centered on Wikimedia employees. This is useful for UX writing for a general audience.
  • Remove the link to draft presentation by WO [[ https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1xeLgj9f1BS4HYYdDMkoHIge3SJtoiXBLHkx-NixhgKg/edit#slide=id.g4bab39e9b0_0_0 | Wolff Olins ]] offers an exploration of Wikipedia’s experience principles and messaging.

[design/codex@main] docs: Remove internal links from "Additional Resources"

For https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1xeLgj9f1BS4HYYdDMkoHIge3SJtoiXBLHkx-NixhgKg/edit#slide=id.g4bab39e9b0_0_0 it might make sense to update and expand our Voice & Tone guidelines. I'd like to hear @bmartinezcalvo's and @DTorsani-WMF's inputs here.

I think if we feel this is all still relevant and accurate (which I imagine we do since we were linking to it in resources) then we can totally consider revising our Voice and tone guidelines to reflect this and surface this guidance. Would we would need to note in the revision that these specific aspects are in collaboration with WO?

I wonder why these principles were not included in the Voice&Tone proposal when it was created and they were included as an additional resource instead. Reading them I think it would be worth including them in Codex, so we can create a separate task to evaluate all them and decide how we want/if we want to include them within Voice&Tone.

Regarding https://office.wikimedia.org/wiki/Inclusive_Communications_Guide I think it would also be worth creating a task to include all these guidelines in Codex, especially the ones related to formats (date, time, etc.) since they will affect our components. Other Design Systems also include these guidelines for data, e.g. Material - Data formats.

cc @mwilliams - I believe these may have been included in the references for Jacqui (the content writer contractor who created the original guidelines before Bárbara did a second pass in notion). I do not think these are a priority to include. My recommendation would be to complete this task to remove the links first and create a second task to incorporate the WO deck and officewiki points as a follow-up later.

To your question @DTorsani-WMF, I don't believe this would require attribution in a similar way that we don't attribute individual authors on these guidelines.
