While writing the usability test protocol for Places in T359196, we noticed that we would like more in-depth testing of the feature when users haven’t enabled location access in the system settings (1) or the app.

It’s essential that users can still use the feature without granting location access, e.g., if they search or navigate to a place on the map by using zoom in/out.

The task

QA will check at least the following scenarios:

  • System location off / App location off (precise/approximate)
  • System location on / App location off (precise/approximate)
  • System location off / App location on (precise/approximate)
  • No internet connection (which helps the GPS to be more efficient)

Please document if specific scenarios feel unexpected or don’t work correctly so we can take the necessary steps to improve them.

Event Timeline

I’ve already done some QA (T358231, T358426) 🙂, thanks for doing more!

Testing on 2.7.50479-r-2024-03-21 (the current play store version), Passing back to Design Signoff for review.

I found this small issue: T360667

So far, I have not found any issues when playing with the location settings, either in the app or in the device settings. I tried allowing and disallowing, along with precise and approximate locations.

Reviewed Places versus Google Maps.

  • In general, our dark mode was a little less user-friendly than the mix of colors on Google Maps dark mode
  • The Wikipedia Apps tends to eliminate text when zoomed out
  • Perhaps using more pictures in the preview would be a good addition
  • Dots do not tend to populate when scrolling around, especially when zoomed out; perhaps a 'populate' button or action to show dots would help. For example: On many map applications, the user can search for a term like "restaurants," move the map focal point to a new area, and the app provides a show "restaurants" in this area option.
