make ContentTranslation messages that mention language names read more naturally
Open, LowPublic

Description

The following ContentTranslation messages mention language names:

  • cx-entrypoint-title
  • cx-entrypoint-dialog-page-doesnt-exist-yet
  • cx-entrypoint-dialog-title-in
  • cx-entrypoint-dialog-button-translate-from
  • cx-tools-mt-not-available
  • cx-error-page-not-found
  • cx-sourceselector-dialog-error-page-and-title-exist
  • cx-sourceselector-dialog-error-page-exists
  • cx-sourceselector-dialog-error-no-source-article
  • cx-trend-translations-to

They tend to use autonyms as parameter values instead of actual language names. It would be much more natural to get them to show full sentences with full language names. This will require fixing {{GRAMMAR}} rules in some languages and probably loading the translated names from CLDR, but it will improve the experience.

E.g. cx-entrypoint-dialog-button-translate-from returns "Traduci da italiano" while "Traduci dall'italiano" would sound more natural.

Yes, this is precisely the idea.

This will probably require more {{GRAMMAR}} rules at least for some languages. I made it for Russian at https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/172501/ . Italian may be more complicated or less complicated.

I am also making a special page for testing this with all language names in a given language - MediaWiki-extensions-TestLanguageNameGrammar. I hope to deploy it in some public site some time soon.

Not sure if my comment fits this task or not, it seems that the cx-sourceselector-dialog-error-page-and-title-exist and cx-sourceselector-dialog-error-page-exists are shown inversely.

New feedback about cx-entrypoint-dialog-page-doesnt-exist-yet on fr.wp:

  • "Cette page n’existe pas encore en English. Voulez-vous la créer ?" instead of "Cette page n’existe pas encore en anglais. Voulez-vous la créer ?"
  • "Cette page n’existe pas encore en 中文. Voulez-vous la créer ?" instead of "Cette page n’existe pas encore en japonais. Voulez-vous la créer ?" (when the characters are different, that's really funny)
