Epic: Retire the MobileApp extension
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

The MobileApp extension currently does very little: it contains some .less files from which the apps generate bundled stylesheets, and a JSON config file that the apps use to publish remote config settings. The .less files are likely soon to be consolidated with the rest of the mobile styles in MobileFrontend, and the JSON config file could easily be moved over as well.

Is it time to retire the MobileApp extension? Does it have any other consumers besides the WMF Wikipedia apps? What would it take to make this happen?

Event Timeline

The extension is used to add the "mobile app edit" tag to edits and uploads done via the Wikipedia App and Commons App (since last week).

What alternative is available if the extension is to retire?

This is premature. There's functionality (like generating the "mobile app edit" designation) and code that doesn't belong anywhere else in MediaWiki. The parent task arose out of a discussion in Reading engineering about how to better coordinate changes to CSS code. Consolidating in MobileFrontend was one possibility, but it's been rejected. That being the case, MobileApp will need to be around for the foreseeable future.
