FileAnnotations: Review information in wikidata annotations, search results and annotation cards
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

We had decided initially that a Wikidata annotation is the best kind, and we should encourage users to add it when possible. Given that we also wanted to let users be able to annotate using just the Wikipedia article, or just the Commons category, where they found fit. After talking a bit with @dchen, I realized that I might not have thought this through.

I now think that-

  1. The users should still be allowed to add Wikipedia articles, or Commons categories, as long as the search results doesn't include a Wikidata item that already links to the article/image/category.
  2. The Wikidata annotation card, apart from linking to the Wikipedia article (in the correct language), and the Commons category, should also link to-
    1. The full image
    2. To the Wikidata item
  3. Users should never choose anything over a Wikidata item, if that link is already part of the Wikidata item

1. Search

When searching for 'Venus', the following results should show up (striking the ones the would have showed up, but I am now suggesting we don't) -

  1. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313 (the planet)
  2. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q47652 (the goddess)
  3. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16429830 (female given name)
  4. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus
  5. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_(mythology)
  6. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VENUS
  7. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_figurines
  8. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonization_of_Venus
  9. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_(given_name)
  10. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Venus-real_color.jpg
  11. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mercury,_Venus_and_the_Moon_Align.jpg
  12. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2012_Transit_of_Venus_from_SF.jpg
  13. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Venus_Arles.jpg
  14. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Venus_de_Milo_edited.jpg
  15. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Venus_(planet)
  16. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Venus
  17. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Venus_(dea)
  18. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Venus_symbols
  19. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Capitoline_Venus

This is a total of 12 results, 3 from each search (Wikidata, Wikipedia, Commons file, Commons category), with no overlaps from the items already linked from any Wikidata item.

2. Annotation card

3. Assumptions

  • It is never better to choose just one of the links from the Wikidata items when.
  • The reader is smart enough to decide which link they want to follow into the subject
  • If the editor really wants to, they can switch to wikitext and add [[en:Venus_(mythology)]] or whatever...

Event Timeline

Just noting that actions such as "see wikidata" requires the user to understand what Wikidata is in order to have an expectation on what they'll find behind that action. I think it would be preferred to refer to the type of content instead of just naming the projects. An action such as "more data", "all data about the topic", or similar with the wikidata logo can be useful to both those familiar with the Wikidata project and those who are not.

Related to this, it would be interesting also to explore whether in some cases, such as for Commons categories, it is possible to use the content directly. That is, showing a few small thumbnails to represent the category.

Makes sense.

That was the idea with 'category only annotations'. Are you suggesting that we have something similar on the Wikidata card too? Would that make it cluttered, or overloaded with information?

Replacing the "See Commons category" with a few small images increases the number of elements, but also the relevance of the information. If those are perceived as a single row of relevant visual information it may not become a point of friction. I included a possible execution below:

Ramsey-WMF changed the task status from Open to Stalled.Oct 6 2017, 11:26 PM
Ramsey-WMF added a project: SDC General.
Ramsey-WMF subscribed.

Stalled because of wait for Wikibase on Commons, which is part of Structured Data on Commons. Also, new and improved "structured" annotations are a goal for SDoC in "The Future"

Ramsey-WMF lowered the priority of this task from High to Medium.Oct 6 2017, 11:36 PM

Since the 2016/2017 FileAnnotations prototype work is now quite outdated and both Wikidata and Commons have new features and design plans (like moving new features to Vue.js on Commons), and the extension is not actively under development, the best thing to do is close these tasks and create new ones when/if there's a team available to pick up development on this feature.
