Shorten the "From/To any language" label in the Translation Dashboard
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The translation dashboard allows users to filter the list of their in-progress and published translations to view only those where a certain language is involved.

The current labels are too verbose, making the selector too prominent for the value it brings (i.e., additional filtering that is not core to the translation process). Some options to shorten them:

  • Any language > Any language. The selector makes the directionality already clear, so there is no need to spell out "to" and "from". In the same way that the selector reading "English > Greek" does not need the "to" and "from" in the selector, those can be removed from the default message too.
  • All > All. Communicating that we show all the results seems enough to introduce the filtering area. Users looking for filtering a specific set of results will find out they can do so by selecting a language as they interact with the selector. Note that for each item in the list of articles we are already indicating the language pairs, which may help to make the connection.

Event Timeline

In Finnish it would be:

From any languageMistä tahansa kielestä
Any languageMikä tahansa kieli
AllKaikki

German has Von einer beliebigen Sprache - only about half of that remains visible to me.

Seems like the last option is the only one that would make a real difference in length.

Since maximum width of CX dashboard is limited at 1500px, per T175004, English version of the label will never show in full capacity, since it needs 1770+ pixels to show in full length. Now there is increased need for shortening the label.

To provide with context about translations to Serbian language, here is following table:

From any languageSa bilo kog jezika
Any languageBilo koji jezik
AllSvi

*I have used Latin script instead of Cyrillic, because most of people reading this aren't familiar with Cyrillic script.

Given the previous Niklas' comment about Finnish versions, and the above table, All (for English version) seems like only real shortening. However, this is clearly a trade-off in terms of ambiguity, given that some languages, like Serbian, have a lot of grammatical cases (7 in Serbian) and users translating this might miss the context.

Also, changing label to All would probably require label Any language, introduced in T169973, to be changed as well, to keep consistency.

Change 378870 had a related patch set uploaded (by Petar.petkovic; owner: Petar.petkovic):

Checked in cx-testing and testwiki (wmf.1) - 'All' is displayed according to the specs.

@Petar I filed T176900: Translation dashboard - 'All' language selection drop-down UI issues which is mostly for Design review (not bugs). However, if you can take a look at the item (3) (about 'All languages' option not being displayed all the time), it'd be great.

Thank you @Etonkovidova for your great work.

I have commented that third point on the newly filed ticket. T176900#3641151
