As I got more familiar with the Wikimedia movement and the way FOSS projects work, I noticed two things:
- Technical translation is a way of contribution less spoken of;
- FOSS projects usually have a hard time expressing in what areas they need help.
A blog post would serve the purpose of:
- promoting this way of contribution among people within the movement;
- being a point of introduction for those who aren't familiar with this aspect of Wikimedia projects and/or MediaWiki;
- a way of encouraging contributions and directing people to the proper resources regarding translations (as Babylon/Translations)
Tasks involved:
- Talk to the team responsible for the Wikimedia blog about the post idea
- Define a timeline/deadline
- Elect the most important points of technical translations (for instance, impact in wiki projects)
- Start a draft
- Submit draft for appraisal
And, hopefully,
- Getting it published
Update: It has been published. Improving MediaWiki’s documentation and localization practices
