Broken redirects after moving homepage
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

We're getting emails about 404 errors for the first two URLs in the list since the homepage moved. I went through the subdomains for wikimedia.se in Loopia and there are a few more strange things going on.

  • wikilovesmonuments.se -> wikimedia.se/wlm
  • wlm.wikimedia.se -> wikimedia.se/sv/wlm/
  • app.wikilovesmonuments.se -> http://wikilovesmonuments.se/app/
    • I think this would end up as wikimedia.se/sv/wlm/app, which doesn't exist on the old website
  • donera.wikimedia.se -> https://wikimedia.se/donera/
    • Loopia claims this goes to 176.10.250.192

Event Timeline

There are a few more subdomains pointing to the old website over at https://se.wikimedia.org/wiki/Lista_%C3%B6ver_dom%C3%A4ner which are likely broken.

"Donera" (both) and "blimedlem" are high priority, the rest less so.

We can probably pause the notifications about wlm, a new landing page will probably take a while but needs to be fixed bedore the start of September.

We should also ensure that the list is updated with any recent redirects/platform changes.

Note that both donera.wikimedia.se and wlm.wikimedia.se might also be used for other things (e.g. databases)

"Donera" (both) and "blimedlem" are high priority, the rest less so.

These three work: donera.wikimedia.se and donera.wikipedia.se both lead to https://wikimedia.se/donera/, blimedlem.wikimedia.se lead to https://wikimedia.se/engagera-dig/. This looks fine to me, though there seems to be at least two steps involved, i.e. there's some logic in the new homepage that redirects e.g. https://www.wikimedia.se/sv/donera to https://wikimedia.se/donera/.

donera.wikimedia.se seems to be a complicated story. Loopia says it points to the old webbpage (via IP) but actualy entering the url takes us to the new one. Doing a dns lookup shows that it's being resolved by loopia though which in turn points it to our Bahnhof server (old webpage).

At the same time donera.wikimedia.se is the name of one of our webservers at GLESys (glesys1). Going to the IP of said server takes us to the new webpage (likely redirect using url). Meanwhile ssh access to glesys1 has failed and so has access to the database for offentligkonst.se (the actual website is still up)

I created Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_in_Sweden and redirected wikilovesmonuments.se to this. I removed app.wikilovesmonuments.se as this has been non-functional for years.

wlm.wikimedia.se still remains as the situation is similar to that of donera, i.e. it is also the name of one of our glesys servers (glesys2).

This should at least half the notifications of broken sites

I'm bumping the priority of this one since the https certificate for donera is about to expire.

Ideally we want to (at least temporary) revive db.offentligkonst.se (which also went down with the redirects) to take a dump of the database.

I could only find two redirects on 176.10.250.192, both for donera., http and https. This should mean that changing the redirect to point directly to the donation page in Loopia should only disable https://donera.wikimedia.se. Since nothing else should break, I'll try that now.

It's not possible to redirect from https in Loopia, see T203949.

Thanks. For the ones below I'll ask theGeneration to set up certs

  • blimedlem.wikimedia.se
  • blog.wikimedia.se
  • donera.wikimedia.se
  • utbildning.wikimedia.se

These are all live now

wlm.wikimedia.se still takes us to https://wikimedia.se/sv/wlm/.

@Evelina-Bang-WMSE What do you think about having a page there that says something along the lines of "//Oups, how did you end up here? The information about Wiki Loves Monuments can be found through http://wikilovesmonuments.se "
