Description

see T243764#5834050

Museums/ Europeana aggregators must understand how new Agents can be created..... the bad quality T243764: en:Wikipedia <-> Europeana Entity has problem with the quality of Europeana Linked data that makes one of the world biggest websites hesitate if they should link Europeana or not is just because of bad management of Authorities/Agents.

The scope of the problem is not bigger than what Wkipedia did in 2012 that we said when we write an article on en:Wikipedia that we connect this article to another language article about the same subject. In Europeana there is nearly no Linked data and Agents is just about one museum saying that this painting is created by xxx that is the same creator we see in other museums....

As museums often have their own systems they already have done the work and need just the Europeana Agent ID ==> Europeana need to set this up!!!

Looks like MET-2410 is an proposed solution

Question asked

As Wikidata is also "available" as Wikibase and implemented in Wikicommons it feels like we should have some kind of entity roundtrip also for pictures uploaded to WIkicommons. More and more institutions speak about Data Roundtrip and then having good metadata referencing each other is step 1

E.g. commons:File:Eivind_Groven_og_Albert_Schweitzer_OB.FS0892.jpg same as Special:EntityData/M63516379

image.png (1×1 px, 535 KB)

is same as

What do we need?

  1. How we do same as?
    1. Wikicommons referencing Europeana and Digitalmuseum using WIkidata properties see above
    2. Europeana is referencing Digitalmuseum
      1. query asking Wikicommons what objects they have referencing Europeana 2022608/OMU_OB_FS0892 --> Wikidata Property 727 --> haswbstatement: P727=2022608/OMU_OB_FS0892
      2. question mark if the Europeana reference is stable link video
    3. Digitalmuseum referencing?
      1. query asking Wikicommons what objects they have referencing Digitalmuseum 011014651264 --> Wikidata Property 7847 --> haswbstatement: P7847=011014651264
  2. implement change management handling changes, deletion, duplicates... ? see problems Europeana <-> Wikidata T243907#5900639

I send a question to Digitalmuseum what they have implemented and future plans?

I guess we need a Wikidata property also for the media file in Digitalmuseum link if we should do data roundtripping not just the container = dimu_code see T243907#5910047

Another test with a picture stored at the Welsh Portrait Collection. They use the Handle System see property discussion for P1184 I feel this is the direction we should move its like DOI but used for digital object?!?!

http://yasgui.org/short/fLTUDXqOy are 16k portraits of @smithsoniannpg in #RDF, collected by http://americanartcollaborative.org, ready to integrate to @wikidata thru https://wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P6152 and https://wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P4692. Both NPG ID and AAC ID are 2.4k in WD; AAC ID's are total 234k. So there are 14k more portraits to be harvested from AAC and posted on WD #SumOfAllPaintings.

With this query http://yasgui.org/short/ZI1xPxBvI :

PREFIX foaf: <http://xmlns.com/foaf/0.1/>
PREFIX crm: <http://www.cidoc-crm.org/cidoc-crm/>
select * {
  ?x crm:P52_has_current_owner <http://data.npg.si.edu>; foaf:homepage <http://npg.si.edu/object/npg_S_NPG.68.11>
}

you can find the RDF for the object above: http://data.americanartcollaborative.org/page/npg/object/57314.
And the linked objects:

Type/Material:

And a bunch of topics:

Eg there are 25 NPG portraits showing crowns:

PREFIX rdfs: <http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#>
PREFIX foaf: <http://xmlns.com/foaf/0.1/>
select * {
  ?x ?p <http://data.npg.si.edu/thesauri/subject/crown>; rdfs:label ?title; foaf:homepage ?page
}

Eg here's an interesting one because it shows crowns but DOES NOT show royalty: http://npg.si.edu/object/npg_NPG.84.TC37 "Hong Kong: 1997 Question".

Old answer from Europeana and the Wikidata property P727 link

image.png (816×2 px, 322 KB)

Salgo60 changed the task status from Open to Stalled.Apr 14 2020, 4:17 AM
Salgo60 moved this task from In progress to Nice to have on the Magnus Sälgö board.

Suggested new user case "New user case: For new agents dereferencing Wikidata URLs also update WIkidata so the Europeana link will be available in Wikipedia" see Google group

image.png (1×2 px, 586 KB)

Next step: Nothing Europeana feels sadly like a dead end.... as Wikicommons takes the next step and now starts support SDC a network like Europeana that are still struggling with matching artists I guess has only one way forward and that is like Wikicommons that has installed Wikibase and do ontology reuse with Wikidata .

My feeling is that the Europeana network doesnt have the skills and maturity for handling Entity management and move away from sending "text strings" and never do entity management for what a picture depicts...

Pieces missing

  • lack of change management: no version management, you never get a trackable helpdeskid
  • lack of commitment: end users (read museums) dont know how to error report and not really care
  • no feeling of urgency and lack of commitment/business idea I get a feeling strings feels good enough and its the number of objects moved that is important not the quality see tweet / tweet / tweet If I compare this when we did international money transactions the turn around time from finding out we had an error and Bank of America called, bugs in the software was found, a patch was installed and the transaction was resend was 2 hours and everything was fixed before they opened the daily business.... in the GLAM sector with maybe thousands of museums I guess we will never see the same commitments or skills it will always be a "text string" business maybe upload on a platform like Wikicommon is a better solution...

With entities used for depicts in a picture we also have the challenge when an user move an item from one plattform to another they can as today retype everythung we need "drag and drop" and get all the metadata/ entities transferred to the new plattforms.
