Pick a wiki to first turn on Parsoid read views for DiscussionTools on
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

It is hard to triage extension support and rendering diffs without knowing whether or not they are used on our initial "Parsoid read views for DiscussionTools" wikis.

We should pick a particular wiki to target for the first turn-on of Parsoid read views for DiscussionTools, so that we can then run visual diff testing against that wiki and reprioritize (if needed) any extension or rendering-fidelity work which impacts that particular wiki's Talk pages.

Ideally our first wiki will be (a) relatively low impact, so broken rendering won't be front page news on a national newspaper, (b) use few extensions within Talk pages with active discussions, and (c) have enough users of DiscussionTools that our userbase is meaningful (and so we'll get good bug reports).

@ppelberg You have thoughts on a choice of wiki? Should we schedule a meeting to discuss this?

hey @ssastry – meeting sounds good. I just proposed a time for us to talk. Please add anyone who I might've missed.

In the meantime, is there documentation you would recommend I read to help reacquaint myself with this work and its potential impact on talk pages? My instinct was to check T272987 and Move to adopt Parsoid as the primary MediaWiki wikitext parser, tho I was looking for ab it more detail than what they currently offer.

We picked hebrew and english wikivoyage. Going to reconfirm this w/ editing tomorrow.

Editing team says we should reconfirm this with @Whatamidoing-WMF .

@cscott, is that Hebrew Wikivoyage, or Hebrew Wikipedia? I'm not sure that hewikivoyage has enough users to meet your goals (though the most active editor there is very helpful, so they would probably be willing to answer any questions you have).

After some discussions and research we decided to go with:

  • Now/Low hanging fruit to explore Parsoid usage: Wikitech DiscussionTools and/or Officewiki Read Views
  • Next: English Wikivoyage DiscussionTools
  • Later: Hebrew Wikipedia DiscussionTools

Alternatively, we are also exploring how to have people opt-in into Parsoid Read Views everywhere for folks that are willing to collaborate providing feedback and filling bug reports. More about that will be tracked in a separate phab task related to T333179: (Re)deploy ParserMigration extension to production.
