Description

Background/Goal

At the moment we only have available as negative logos some of the Wikimedia logos in our icon system Figma file. We need to add all of them.

Captura de pantalla 2022-03-17 a las 13.14.54.png (368×1 px, 144 KB)

Also we need to add all the positive logos in our icon system to have them available when we need to use them.

Will you want the Wikifunctions logo too?

Will you want the Wikifunctions logo too?

@Jdforrester-WMF yes, if we have the Wikifunctions logo send it to me please. I need it in SVG.

Hi all,

I have added both positive and negative logos. Positive logos are all right since they need to be exactly the same logo as we used in our different Wikimedia products. Regarding negative logos, I have a couple of proposals:

  • Option 1: Leave negative logos as they are in positive version (without simplify them)

Option1.png (336×1 px, 48 KB)

  • Option 2: Simplify negative logos (simplified only the ones with a pink dot: Wikinews, Wikisource, Wikispecies and Wikitionary)

Option2.png (336×1 px, 49 KB)

As negative logos are currently used in App projects, I request feedback from @cmadeo and @scblr.

NOTE: In case we update negative logos with a simplified version, should we talked with the brand team? cc: @iamjessklein

I think that we ultimately will need negative versions of all the logos.
I believe that this does touch the toes of the branding team's work, so I want to loop in @ZMcCune for good measure here to see if he has any context that we should be aware of before diving into such a project.

As we have our positive logos done I can publish them in our library so designers can start using them. I will publish the negative ones when we have @ZMcCune approval.

@ZMcCune I have a question about Wikimedia Foundation logo, I've viewed that we are mostly using the negative version but sometimes I find the positive logo in some places. Which one should we use? I think negative one is the right option but what should we do with the positive Wikimedia Logo? Should I delete it from library to avoid using it or we can use it in some cases?

Thanks for adding me @iamjessklein!

In regards to your question @bmartinezcalvo, the Wikimedia Foundation uses the "single color" mark ("negative") along with many of the Wikimedia Chapters (e.g. Wikimedia Deutschland, Norge, etc.) The "tri-color" mark ("positive") is used to more generally stand for the Wikimedia movement. I would recommend that you include both styles because it is used for functions.

Thank you @ZMcCune for the info about the positive-negative Wikimedia Foundation logo.

Regarding the rest of negative logos, what should we do?

  • Option 1: Leave negative logos as they are in positive version (without simplifying them)

Option1.png (336×1 px, 48 KB)

  • Option 2: Simplify negative logos (simplified only the ones with a pink dot: Wikinews, Wikisource, Wikispecies and Wikitionary since they are the logos that don't work as a negative icon)

Option2.png (336×1 px, 49 KB)

Definitely a fan of your new simplified, negative logos in Option 2 @bmartinezcalvo. I’d use them on Android, right away. After working here for a bit, I assume that the changes to the negative logos of Wikinews, Wikisource, Wikispecies and Wiktionary might be larger than us (the Subscribers of this task). It might need a few rounds of community consultation – or at least community information. Maybe @Johan could help us with that?

The safe and straightforward approach (which obviously isn’t that progressive), is to just to use the 1:1 “translation” in Option 1. It likely wouldn’t need community consultation.

I'm sure @ZMcCune has comments here, but a complicating factor is that these are not as much logos for products owned by the Wikimedia Foundation as they are visual identities of the volunteer communities, typically not designed by us from the very beginning but in a community vote on various suggestions. They might react pretty much the same way as any other group would if we decided to change their logo.

With that said I think there is a point in option 2, just that we shouldn't unilaterally decide on it, and for example the Wiktionary one already pretty much matches the smaller one used in some contexts (maybe that was on purpose?).

Hi all,

As we are not clear whether or not we can simplify the negative logos as they are visual identities of the volunteer communities, I'm going to move the task by adding the non-simplified negative logos (Option 1) to be able to have and use them in Figma in a safe way without getting into complications.

The logos more complex and that less fit with this negative version are:

  • Wikinews
  • Wikisource
  • Wikispecies
  • Wikitionary

We can update them again if we decide to simplify them in the future.
