According to a Google Groups thread [1] some of bug T30601 is fixed in 1.1.17

This bug might not be worth fixing if we take the decision to migrate to Etherpad Lite ( bug 34953 )

When? Has this been announced? Will existing pads be migrated?

This is never going to be fixed. Please use the labs instance instead: http://etherpad.wmflabs.org/pad/

i would not recommend using labs, labs is for testing.
